What Does God Look Like?

Laura Kuester

Exodus 33:18  “And he said, Please show me your Glory.”

Today, through the window, I watched my son riding on the lawn mower in his daddy’s lap. As I watched him I wondered how he had grown up so fast and where the last five and a half years had gone. My thoughts began to wander and I began thinking about what he would look like in 5, 10, 20 years. I wondered if he would look more and more like his daddy ?

I remember being pregnant with both of my children and wondering what and who they were going to look like. Everyone else in the family was doing the same thing. As soon as they each were born the attention quickly went off of me and onto them where everyone was picking the body parts that most resembled themselves.

Anyway- There have many times that I have contemplated what God looks like as well. Most believers will confess that they can’t wait to see Jesus face to face when they get to Heaven. Moses had a desire to see the face of God too.

While no one can see the face of God and live, the Lord promised to reveal Himself to Moses as the God of grace and compassion. God placed Moses on rock and covered Moses with His hand. As God passed by, Moses caught a glimpse of God’s afterglow (Exodus 33:17-23).

God doesn’t have a physical body he dwells as purity of light. Moses only saw a glimpse of His full splendor. Our Lord has given us a glimpse of his glory too. The beauty of God is revealed to us on earth. God’s splendor is displayed before our eyes by His creation, in His grace and compassion and in His son- Jesus.

If you think that you have missed seeing Him then come with me a little closer and let’s take a look.

God looks like compassion when the kindness of another provides you with a meal.

God looks like comfort when a friend consoles a broken heart.

God looks like shelter when you have been protected from a dangerous situation.

God looks like creation when the sun sets over the ocean.

God looks like love when Christ came to earth.

God looks like strength when He empowers you to endure through a tough situation.

God looks like grace when he forgives your sins.

God looks like mercy when he supplies all of your needs.

And we see God in Jesus Christ who is the exact expression of all of His glory.

We don’t have to wait until Heaven to see God. He is in us, around us and with us always. Open your eyes and see God.
