Rain…
Rain! WOW! It has been unbelievable lately. As I look out the window on this Tuesday morning I see that it has started pouring again. They say that the number of people that are depressed in states like Washington, where it rains most of the time, is a lot higher in states where it doesn’t. I can believe it! I see a lot of people walking around with a blank look on their faces lately. It’s amazing that when the sun comes out the perspective really changes.
There is an expression I heard a few years ago that reminds me of what it’s like when the gray skies get you down. It is called “being in the doldrums”. The phrase originated from sailing vessels on the sea. There would be times when there would be no wind and so when that would happen they would call it being “in the doldrums”. Sometimes it would last for days and a ship full of people would be stuck in the middle of the sea with no means of moving. Oftentimes sailors would go crazy or at least begin to act a bit odd due to the hopelessness of the situation.
I think there are times like that in our spiritual lives as well. We get rained on and rained on and rained on. Or, we find ourselves in the midst of a “doldrums” time of life and it seems like it will never end.
When I find myself there I realize that I have usually lost perspective and taken my eyes off the SON. Hebrews 12:2-3 says this, ‘Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, for who the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”
You see, oftentimes the doldrums of life or the rainy days of life are brought on by an outside force that is out of our control. We can focus on the origin of the source, i.e. the rain or lack of wind, or we can see this as an opportunity to slow down and fix our eyes on Jesus. Whenever we find ourselves discouraged or doubting it is because we have our gazed fixed on ourselves instead of the SON. So if you are fed up with the rain or if you are in the doldrums of life, why not focus instead on the SON and see if things don’t start changing.
