“And He [Jesus] called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits” (Mark 6:7).
Why did Jesus send out the disciples two-by-two?
1. They could encourage one another.
2. They could bear witness of Jesus Christ (2 witnesses were required to establish a fact).
3. Two heads, more wisdom.
4. Faith in prayer is bolstered by the help of another.
5. Accountability to walk in holiness, and not stray.
6. Two different personalities, two different sets of gifts.
7. At the end of the day, it’s easier to remember what God did.
8. Additional protection when confronting the possessed.
9. Added compassion for the lost and sick.
10. Prevention against delusions of grandeur, pride and a messiah-complex.
11. Constant social interaction.
12. Tag-teaming “Amens!”
“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up….Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken” (Eccl. 4:9-12).
And as those great theologians, Three Dog Night, used to sing: “One is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do.”
Aren’t you tired of being alone, and trying to solve all the world’s problems yourself? Isn’t it time to find one person in whom you can trust, become accountable to for your spiritual journey, and discover the “times of refreshing” and the joy of the Lord again?
Have a fantastic day in the Lord, building a “threefold cord” of support, knowing that there will be days when it will be your only “rope” to pull you out of the…mess you made.
